A prefecture on the western edge of Japan, rarely on the itinerary — and yet it keeps quoting the rest of the world back to us.

Water becomes a mirror twice on this earth: once above the East China Sea, once beneath the palms of Ubud. Both were carved by hand, one contour at a time, by people who agreed to be patient.
A mountain floating at the edge of the Karatsu coast. Across the sea, Hawaii keeps a landscape that looks alike. Two distant shores, drawing the same line of mountain and water.
Red timber against a wet green mountain. Two faiths, two continents, the same instinct: build the sacred where the hillside refuses you, then climb anyway.
A village of kilns held between mountains in Saga. A province held between waters in the Netherlands. Two distant places, still keeping the same blue and white in their landscape.
Hizen Komainu, standing in a Saga shrine. Salguebrou, carved in a church in Auvergne, France. In two distant lands, people placed stones with slightly frightening faces, to protect places of prayer.
The sea and town, and beside them, a castle. Karatsu and San Sebastián. Two distant bays share a similar landscape.

Shiroyama in Imari, and Fai della Paganella, Italy. Sunflowers bloom in the yard, and beyond them lie the mountains. The very similar summer daily lives of two distant towns.
There is another sky in the rice fields. Saga and Laos. Flooded paddies mirror two skies far apart.

The nature of the mountains, and what human hands make. Okawachiyama, home of Nabeshima ware, and Shaoxing, where craft in ceramics and bamboo has lived on for centuries. Two autumn scenes that resemble each other, and the handwork beyond them.
